Dimitris Kontos was one of the most remarkable abstract artists. In the late 50's and early 60's, he did his first move in the field of abstraction according to the artistic currents that prevailed at that time in both Rome and Paris. Moreover, he went beyond the traditional boundaries of the frame in his artworks with the potential to extend indefinitely on the wall or in free space and he used handwriting, cultivated amorphous and conceptual art. His works exude his refreshing and restless artistic spirit while remaining modern and bold samples of thought and writing in the Greek and International art space. Furthermore, his creations are characterised by a unique gestural style, often in a spiral pattern, with pencils or water colours on paper. The creation of plastic space through gesture and material alluded to both natural phenomena and the energy produced by the human body. It is significant to be mentioned that in 1967-68, he created the Roman Pictural, an art book with an abstract poetic writing, running through its pages. During all this time, he participated in exhibitions which brought to light the innovative suggestions of the Greek Diaspora artists, the so-called ‘60s generation.
